Protect the Security of Your LinkedIn Profile

A newer service — and default setting — on LinkedIn allows Microsoft to take information from your profile and make it available to every LinkedIn user. It is called Resume Assistant and it poses a potential risk to the security of your LinkedIn account.

To protect your unique selling points detailed in your LinkedIn headline, summary, work experiences, and skills, go into your LinkedIn profile settings and opt out of sharing your public profile information with Resume Assistant.

Step 1: Go to your settings and privacy tab.
Step 2: Click on Privacy.
Step 3: Scroll down to Data Privacy and Advertising, select Microsoft Word, and click No.

If you cannot find the Microsoft Word option, please check your mobile LinkedIn app and follow Steps 1-3. As of January 24, 2018, it seems LinkedIn has removed the setting from desktop access.

You can also use this backdoor link to opt out of Resume Assistant.

Two more important privacy settings on LinkedIn:

Profile Visibility off LinkedIn
Step 1: Go to your settings and privacy tab.

Public Profile Settings

Step 2: Review your settings.
Step 3: Choose Hide for anything you don’t want publicly displayed or scraped.
